Organized pencils and desk

As artists, it’s not uncommon for us to embrace the chaos that often accompanies our creative processes. Our studios might be in a perpetual state of disarray, our closets teetering on the edge of chaos, and our minds…well, let’s just say they have their own unique way of functioning.

This, in turn, can lead to some interesting interactions with those less inclined to revel in the artistic mayhem – just ask my husband; he’s often caught in the crossfire of my creative whirlwind!

However, while creative chaos has its time and place, living in a perpetual state of disarray can only take us so far, especially if we have aspirations of turning our art into a thriving business.

It was precisely this realization that prompted me to embark on a journey of organization and structure. Taming the chaos has not only kept me on top of my creative game but has also acted as a safeguard against the dreaded burnout.

So, without further ado, here are some tried-and-true tips that I’ve personally found invaluable in maintaining a semblance of order amidst the artistic tempest.

1. Discover the Planner That Speaks to You

The first step in your journey toward organization is finding a planner that resonates with your unique style and lifestyle. With countless options available, it can be overwhelming, but fear not, there’s a perfect planner out there for everyone.

If you find yourself constantly glued to your phone or laptop, a digital planner might be the ideal choice. Conversely, if you prefer to take a break from technology and relish the tactile feel of paper, a physical planner could be your best bet.

Having tried many planners over the years – from conventional ones to pricey alternatives, bullet journals, and digital planners – I’d often struggled with consistency. That was until I stumbled upon Notion, a versatile digital platform that’s become my holy grail.

The initial draw? It’s free, and the templates I use are complimentary as well. Sure, there are paid templates available, but I’ve found the free ones to be more than adequate. Notion serves as my all-in-one life map, housing my content planner, budget tracker, reading list, social media growth monitor, wish list, and more.

What truly seals the deal for me is its accessibility; Notion offers both a desktop and mobile app. So, whether I’m at my computer or on the move, I can effortlessly access and update my planner.

2. Set Mindful Reminders

Owning a planner is the first step, but regularly consulting and updating it is the key to a well-organized life. However, introducing this new routine into your life might be met with occasional forgetfulness. Fear not; it’s a common hiccup, and there are strategies to overcome it.

If you’re like me and occasionally forget to check your planner, setting reminders can be a game-changer. You can schedule recurring alarms on your phone to prompt you to review your agenda. Alternatively, if you’re aiming to reduce screen time, strategically placing sticky notes in spots you frequent daily can serve as visual cues.

These reminders will ease you into the habit of regularly referencing and updating your planner. With a bit of patience and consistency, it will become second nature.

3. Strike a Balance: Avoid Overplanning

When inspiration strikes, it’s tempting to go all-in. The belief that impeccable organization will ensure flawless execution often leads to overplanning. However, this can be a one-way ticket to burnout.

It’s essential to maintain a realistic approach. Avoid cramming too many high-priority tasks into a single day. Even during those bursts of motivation, remember that even superheroes take breaks.

Plan with the understanding that flexibility is key. Unexpected situations may arise, and it’s perfectly acceptable to adjust your plans accordingly. Planning is a guide, not a straitjacket. Feel free to push back deadlines or reschedule tasks if it contributes to your overall mental well-being.

In closing, I hope you’ve found these insights helpful on your quest for greater organization. Remember, embracing order in your creative journey doesn’t mean stifling your artistic spirit; rather, it’s about harnessing that spirit more efficiently.
